Leave the Idealization of the First Date at the Door – Verily

Image
Accept the beauty of reality. Picture this: a girl getting dolled up in front of her bedroom mirror, primping for hours until she is sure she looks perfect. A boy shows up at her front door and nervously knocks, flowers hidden behind his back. He sweeps her away on his arm to a candlelit dinner where they lean in, talking non-stop (interrupted only by a few nervous giggles and blushes). Later when he drives her home (after modestly holding her hand on the way to the car), he walks her to the door, and under the front porch light, she stands on her tiptoes for a kiss. Sigh . . . This, dear reader, is a fiction, probably inspired by an episode of Leave it to Beaver. Realistically, she didn’t feel like she looked perfect and probably wished she had more deodorant on. The conversation didn’t always flow easily and was peppered with awkward silences and small talk about the waiter. He probably had a piece of lettuce stuck in his teeth before the main course. And as for the goodnight k...

My Friend Won’t Share Her Boyfriend’s Age. Should I Be Worried? – The New York Times

Image
Style | My Friend Won’t Share Her Boyfriend’s Age. Should I Be Worried? SOCIAL Q’S A reader wonders how much is appropriate to say when a pal is dating across a seemingly significant age gap. My friend does missionary work in a developing country. She’s in her 60s. She took up with a local man, and now her Facebook page is filled with heart-shaped photos of them and proclamations of how he’s changed her life. She mentioned an age difference, but wouldn’t say how old he is. (He looks to be in his mid-20s.) The director of her program told her the relationship was inappropriate and posed risks to her. I agree. At best, she makes it out with a bruised heart; at worst, she marries the man and finds herself financially and emotionally ruined. So, what do I owe my old friend? C. I know you’re trying to look out for your friend. But your question is loaded with ungenerous assumptions (and unfounded catastrophes) about her and her relationship. Is this adult woman really ...

Travelling with a child who has a different surname: this is what you’ll need to prove you are their parent – Edinburgh News

Image
When travelling abroad, there are a lot of things to take into consideration before travelling – is your passport up to date, have you booked accommodation, have you brought enough sunscreen? Something you may not have considered, though, is the potential difficulties you can face when you’re travelling abroad and your child has a different surname to you. This is what to do to make your travelling as smooth as possible (Photo: Shutterstock) Why could my child’s surname be an issue? In order to protect against child abduction, you could be refused at check in, turned away at the border and even stopped and held for questioning at the airport. The Home Office official Twitter account explained, “We have a duty to safeguard children and to prevent people trafficking, child sexual exploitation and other crimes. “That is why Border Force officers sometimes need to ask additional questions.” This is everything you need to know to avo...

This Couple Met On An Christian Dating App & Got Married Four Months Later – Elite Daily

Image
Are you dying to know what a couple’s relationship is really like? Elite Daily’s new series, ILYSM , celebrates couples who met on dating apps and dives into the inner workings of their relationships. How did they know they were falling for each other? Who sent the first awkward message? What’s the one thing they fight about? Are they astrologically compatible, and do they care? By the end of each story, you’ll love them both so much. Aliza Eaton, 21, and Austin Henline, 22, met on Mutual — a dating app designed for single members of the Church of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). Austin used Mutual for a year and went on almost 100 dates before meeting Aliza, while Aliza only had the app for one night before she matched with Austin. Their first date was so good, she deleted Mutual immediately afterward. After feeling an instant connection over sushi and a dance-off in a park (so cute) , the two dated for two months before getting engaged. They matched in September 2018, got engaged that N...

How to Navigate the Awkward World of New Parent Relationships – Willamette Week

Image
You get a lot of advice when you become a parent. Most of it involves poop. But seldom are you warned that you’re about to become a friendless shell of your former self. OK, that’s extreme. But new parents spend the first six months or so in a state of perpetual, sleepless shellshock. After the old friend crew does the required meal-train drop-off, things can shift. After months of ignoring RSVP requests, your childless buddies move on and keep doing their thing without you. That’s no knock on them—not everyone gets honorary aunt or uncle status. But when you finally shake off the post-birth catatonia and somnambulistic survivalism, you’ll realize it’s time to make new friends. That is, friends with kids. And most of the time, parents don’t get to pick those friends—their kids do. But there’s hope. Yes, by the time your kid is ready to socialize, you’re going to be socially awkward from the isolation and exhaustion, but so is everybody else rocking a Baby Björn. Some w...

10 Not-Lame Ways To Make Friends In College – Refinery29

Image
Photographed by Ashley Armitage. While social media has made it easier than ever for college students to figure out where the lit parties are, or gently stalk their assigned roommate before move-in day , making IRL friends and true connections in college is not always so simple. The truth is, going from high school to college is a big life transition, whether you’re moving across the country or just going down the street. In college, your worldview widens, you experience lots of life changes, and your social circle also grows big time. “It makes relationships quite difficult in this transition,” says Akua K. Boateng , PhD, LPC, a licensed psychotherapist in Philadelphia. You have to decide, “who will be the people that will accompany me in this journey?” she adds. If the thought of making small talk in a classroom or rushing a sorority makes you nervous, here’s some expert advice for making friends from Dr. Boateng and others: Join a club or other g...

How to Tell if Someone Blocked You on Facebook – Reader’s Digest

Image
Kostenko Maxim/Shutterstock When tensions run high on Facebook, you may get blocked. Here’s how to tell if someone has blocked or unfriended you. Facebook can sometimes feel like the world’s best reunion party. You run into people you haven’t seen in a long time, share favorite throwback photos, and heart one another’s most uplifting memes. Other times it can feel like a battlefield. Conflicts of interest can send tensions high, with arguments about to erupt at every turn. You’ve probably blocked (or at least “snoozed for 30 days”) someone you disagree with, so it’s equally likely that at least one “friend” has you blocked. Here’s how to tell if someone has blocked you on Facebook. Method 1: Scroll through your friend list You can tell if someone blocked you on Facebook by scrolling your friend list. Social media professional Chad R. MacDonald manages Facebook pages with tens of thousands of followers and is highly experienced with handling Face...

The Regrettes Interview: Band Talks Sophomore Album ‘How Do You Love?’ and Perfect Love Songs – Billboard

Image
“I was writing a lot of songs about the situation I was in… a lot of ups and downs and emotional turmoil,” Lydia Night tells Billboard. “It doesn’t feel real,” The Regrettes guitarist Genessa Gariano admits to Billboard , while sitting among her band mates — singer Lydia Night, bassist Brooke Dickson and drummer Drew Thomsen. It’s the release date of their sophomore album, How Do You Love? , a concept album released last week through Warner Records which loosely follows Night’s experience through a relationship, from first-date jitters to the inevitable crash-and-burn of a break-up. The L.A. power-rockers try to prove just that with songs like “I Dare You” and “Fog” on the new album. “You say my name I start to feel crazy / I can’t help but wonder how we got here/ I look at you, fog starts to clear,” Night sings on the latter track, her rich voice growling. That blunt enthusiasm is a trait that might scare some partners away, but it’s deployed sincerely here. In an extended disc...
